How to apply for short-term study in Australia
Come and study at Federation to broaden your education and experience life in Australia. Your time here could even count towards your degree back home.
Federation is one of Australia’s oldest universities. We have several campuses across regional Victoria and offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. But what we’re most proud of is our diverse student community. We welcome students from all over the world, and we’d love you to join us.

Global immersion program
This six-week program combines academic study, industry engagement and cultural exploration. Develop your skills, earn credit towards selected Federation courses and experience life in Australia.
Experience tours
The Federation University Experience Tour offers an immersive introduction to Australian university life. You'll take part in interactive workshops, classroom experiences and campus tours, and explore iconic locations such as the Great Ocean Road and Melbourne’s cultural precincts. You'll also get to meet current Federation students and learn about study pathways.
Cost: $3,300 per participant, which includes:
- accommodation at Mt Helen Campus (Ballarat) and in Melbourne
- airport pick-up and drop-off
- Great Ocean Road trip and train travel
- most meals
- academic and cultural activities
- a Federation University merchandise pack.
To secure your spot, please complete the enrolment form.
We'll send you an invoice after you enrol. As soon as you've paid your fee, you should submit your tourist visa application. When the visa comes through, let us know (and book your flights). If it's refused, you must advise the University and submit the visa refusal letter to get a fee refund.
Exchange program
If you're enrolled at one of our exchange partner institutions, you can come and study at Federation University for one or two semesters through our exchange program. You'll earn credit towards your degree and be charged your usual tuition and student fees through your home university.
You must:
- be enrolled in one of our exchange partner institutions.
- have been officially nominated by your home institution to study at Federation University
- have completed at least one year of full-time study at your home institution (or equivalent)
- meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the level of study you plan to do
have a GPA of 2.6 out of 4 (or equivalent) - meet Federation University’s English language requirements
- be at least 18 years old when your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.
You should also talk to your course advisor to make sure you have the flexibility to complete one or two semesters abroad as part of your course.
You must enrol in a full-time load (three or four units per semester).
Explore the course structures listed below, then read individual unit outlines. Ask your course advisor if the units you're interested in will actually count towards your degree.
Make a list of six potential units (in preference order) for a one-semester exchange or twelve potential units (in preference order) for a two-semester exchange. Keep in mind that you won't be able to enrol in units with placements or work-integrated learning components. Your home university should approve your proposed study plan before you apply.

Outcome
If your application is successful, we'll send you an offer letter. If any extra documents are required, we'll let you know.
Acceptance
To accept your place, you’ll need to return your signed offer letter and include proof that you've paid for Overseas Student Health Cover (see details below). After this, you’ll receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) letter.
Health insurance
You must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to study in Australia. We can arrange this for you for a fee (through Bupa Australia) or you can organise it yourself. Either way, you’ll need to provide proof of OSHC when you apply for a student visa.
If you’re from Norway, Sweden or Belgium you may not need OSHC. You can read more about health insurance on the Australian Government Study Australia website.
Student visa
You must have a student visa to study in Australia. Follow the steps on the Department of Home Affairs website to apply for one. You’ll need your CoE, evidence of your OSHC, identity documents, evidence of your English language level and more. If you have any visa questions, contact the Department of Home Affairs.
Orientation and enrolment
Before the semester starts, there will be a compulsory on-campus orientation. This is when you’ll get to meet Federation staff and students, find out where to go for classes and learn about student resources and support services. You’ll also be enrolled into the subjects you've selected.
Completion of studies
At the end of your time at Federation, we’ll send a copy of your academic transcript to your home university so you have your credits transferred.
Study abroad program
If your university isn't one of our exchange partners, you can still come and study in Australia for one or two semesters through our study abroad program. You’ll pay Federation University a tuition fee of $12,450 AUD per semester (for three or four units).
You must:
- have completed at least one year of full-time study at your home institution (or equivalent)
- meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the level of study you plan to do
