Person walking near modern building on Mt Helen Campus.

Mt Helen is set on a whopping 110 hectares of bushland, so you can listen to birdsong as you study, smell the scent of the eucalypts and – if you're lucky – spot a koala during your lunch break. Many of our buildings have a view of the 'Tree of Knowledge' – an incredible Tasmanian Blue Gum in the main courtyard. It was planted in 1896 and is over 40 metres tall.

Wondering about our facilities? The campus has everything you need – it's basically a mini town. There's also the Ballarat Technology Park onsite (where you’ll find IBM, Grampians Health, Triple Zero Victoria and other businesses).

Mt Helen is 10 kms from the centre of Ballarat. The drive will take about 20 minutes, or if you catch the bus, allow half an hour. You can also cycle – there's a great track along the Canadian Creek.

The traditional custodians for this area are the Wadawurrung peoples.

How to get to campus

Mt Helen Campus is 10km from the Ballarat CBD. It takes 15–30 minutes to drive, depending on how much traffic there is. Our best tip? Avoid Geelong Rd during school pick up and drop off times. Try Buninyong/Sebastopol Rd or Yankee Flat Rd instead.

As for car parks – there are 1,300 free spaces and 350 permit spaces, so you'll probably find one. See the campus map (PDF 3.1 MB) for car park locations and mobility routes.

Got an electric vehicle? You can charge it on campus.

There are two bus services (route 21 and route 22) that run between Ballarat Train Station and Mt Helen Campus, starting at 5.30 am and finishing at 8.30 pm. The trip takes about 25 minutes. V/Line buses connect Ballarat with Geelong and other regional centres. Bus pick-up and drop-off bays are located outside the station on Lydiard Street North. You'll need a myki to travel on buses.

V/Line trains run from Melbourne, Ararat and Maryborough to Ballarat. The Melbourne-to-Ballarat service departs from Southern Cross Station and stops at Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. You can download a train timetable or plan your journey online. You'll need a myki to travel on trains.

You can cycle from the Ballarat CBD to Mt Helen via the Canadian Creek Trail, which starts in Barkly St (near the netball centre).

On campus there's free undercover bike parking with room for over 60 bikes located under P Building. Swipe your student ID card over the sensor to gain entry. There are 10 lockable cages as well – available on request. You can also access showers, lockers, puncture repair kits and a clothes line to dry your cycling clothes (upstairs in P Building). Contact the Sustainability Officer if your ID card doesn't work.

If you need to come straight to campus from the Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, you can get an airport shuttlebus to the centre of Ballarat (which will take about 1.5 hours) then take a bus out to Mt Helen.
