SMB is where Federation University started way back in 1870 – known then as School of Mines Ballarat. The site is right in the heart of Ballarat, which means easy access to shops, cafes and public transport. The train station is about a 20-minute walk, and there's a footy oval and walking trail next door.
The campus also includes Federation College, the Building and Construction Training Centre, the Manufacturing and Engineering Skills Centre and the Flecknoe Building – a digital innovation hub for entrepreneurs and startups.
The traditional custodians for this area are the Wadawurrung peoples.
How to get to campus
Car parking at SMB is limited. Free parking is available along Albert Street and at White Flat oval behind S Building. There are also 50 permit spaces available near S Building and T Building.
Got an electric vehicle? You can charge it on campus.
There are 20 bus routes in Ballarat, and most of them stop at the Ballarat Train Station (which is a five-minute walk from SMB Campus). You'll need a myki to travel on buses.
V/Line trains run from Ballarat to Melbourne, Ararat and Maryborough. The Melbourne-to-Ballarat service departs from Southern Cross Station and stops at Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. You can download a train timetable or plan your journey online. You'll need a myki to travel on trains.
SMB is easy to get to by bicycle. There are 20 bike racks behind Prospects Restaurant (J building) and various bike loops throughout the campus.
If you need to come straight to campus from the Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, you can get an airport shuttlebus. The trip will take about 1.5 hours.
