Minimum IT requirements
You'll need adequate hardware, software and internet access to study at Federation.
During your studies you’ll probably need to watch educational videos, access research and reading materials, complete online assessments, and participate in discussion forums, chat groups and virtual classes. Make sure your technology and IT skills are up to the job.
Get set up before you start
You'll need:
- a desktop computer or laptop (that ideally isn't more than two years old)
- a webcam and headset (including microphone).
You'll need:
- Windows 10 or later, or Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave or later (we don't support Chrome OS)
- an updated internet browser like Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge (we don't support Internet Explorer)
- Microsoft Office 365 (install it for free).
You should expect to use about 4.6 GB of internet data per month for each subject you study (although it might be more). If you don't have access to fast and reliable wi-fi at home, you're welcome to bring your device to campus and connect to the Federation wi-fi (called Eduroam).
Check your IT skills
Studying will be easier if you know how to:
- install, use and keep your internet browser and other software up to date
- connect your laptop and/or mobile device to the wi-fi at Federation, your local library, or other locations
- use a web camera and headset/microphone
- use cloud storage (like Office 365 OneDrive)
- use Microsoft Word and other Office applications.
Support is available
If you don't have access to the hardware or software you need, we can help.
You can borrow a laptop, book a computer or bring your own device and use the free campus wi-fi.
