Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability

The Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability (IISS) fosters discovery, data analysis and invention in the fields of science, engineering, technology and business.

Welcome to the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability – where ideas, expertise and collaboration come together to address complex challenges facing industry, communities and the environment. Led by Iven Mareels, Pro Vice‑Chancellor, and Shyh Wei Teng, Deputy Dean, the Institute brings together disciplines across science, engineering, information technology, mathematics and business to deliver education and research with regional, national and global relevance.

At IISS, our academics and professional staff combine rigorous scholarship with applied, real‑world focus. Teaching is shaped by industry needs and emerging technologies, and delivered through a mix of on‑campus learning, practical experiences, digital delivery and research‑informed curriculum. Through strong links with industry partners, community organisations and research collaborators, the Institute supports innovation, sustainability and graduate outcomes that equip students and researchers to make a meaningful impact in a changing world.

Working with industry

How did we achieve a 5‑star rating for skills development in the Good Universities Guide 2025? By giving our students the opportunity to do plenty of real-world work experience. And partnering with local organisations doesn't just mean job-ready graduates – it also helps address skills shortages in regional communities.
