Turn an Idea into a Real-World Digital Solution
The ICT50220 Diploma of Information Technology is more than a qualification. It is an immersive, project-based experience that allows students to think, work, and deliver like ICT professionals.
Throughout the course, students identify a genuine technology problem, develop a solution, build a working product, and launch it to real users. Rather than completing disconnected assessments, students graduate with a portfolio of evidence, practical experience, and a completed project that demonstrates their ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate technology solutions in a professional environment.
The Diploma is an ideal next step for students progressing from Certificate IV studies and provides strong preparation for further education pathways such as a Bachelor of Information Technology, while also equipping graduates with the skills required to enter the workforce, freelance, or launch their own technology venture.
Students can attend on campus or online, with flexible learning options ensuring that all learning activities and assessments can be completed regardless of location.
Learn by Doing
The Diploma operates as a collaborative ICT studio where students work on authentic industry-style projects. Throughout the year, students take on the role of business analysts, designers, developers, project managers, cybersecurity practitioners, and digital innovators.
Students learn how to:
• Identify and analyse real business and technology problems
• Conduct professional research and stakeholder consultation
• Design and prototype digital solutions
• Manage projects using industry-standard methodologies
• Develop websites, systems, applications, and digital services
• Apply cybersecurity, privacy, and compliance principles
• Test, improve, and deploy technology solutions
• Present and pitch ideas to industry and end users
Regular engagement with industry professionals provides valuable feedback and insight, helping students understand current practices and expectations within the technology sector.
Your Project Journey
1. Pitch
Discover a real-world problem, research industry needs, consult stakeholders, and develop a viable ICT solution. You'll refine your concept and present a professional project pitch.
2. Blueprint
Plan before you build. Create design specifications, prototypes, project documentation, and learn how privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance shape successful technology projects.
3. Build
Bring your solution to life through an agile development process. You'll create, test, refine, and demonstrate working versions of your product while receiving guidance from industry-experienced trainers.
4. Launch
Test, improve, and deploy your solution to real users. The course culminates in a final showcase where you present your product, your development journey, and the impact of your solution.
Graduate with More Than a Qualification
By the end of the Diploma, you won't just have completed assessments. You'll have developed a professional portfolio, launched a real project, and gained practical experience that demonstrates your ability to deliver technology solutions in real-world environments.

Hear from our staff

Hi, my name is Dr Gour Karmakar and I am the Associate Professor in Information Technology and Program Coordinator of Bachelor of IT Gippsland and Networking and Security stream at Federation University. My favourite part of this program is that it comprises contemporary and in-demand courses and streams such as Business Information Systems, Big Data, Analytics, Networking and Security and Software Development. They enable students to get highly paid jobs such as data scientist, cyber security and networking specialist, software engineer and business analyst. The program not only focuses the development of theoretical knowledge but also underpins on hands-on experience and contemporary tools. Using contemporary tools they equip students with sufficient knowledge and technical foundational skill to apply in different business context. What makes our program different from other universities is that we are collaborating with industry to embed co-op education, that is co-design, co-delivery and co-assessment of the courses. Besides, authentic assessment is the bedrock of this program. The coordination of co-operation is also mapping the courses to relevant vendor certification which help students become job ready and secure great job. Fun fact, that I occasionally write poetry and like walking in the morning. So please study this course and join Federation University.
