University legislation

Explore the rules and guidelines that relate to the organisation and management of the University.

The Federation University Australia Act, statute and regulations are the rules that guide how we operate. They set out what the University can do, how decisions are made and the standards we follow to keep things fair and safe. We use them to set policies, create procedures, guidelines and manuals, and translate these into instructions for specific tasks. These rules help make sure everyone – students, staff and the community – knows what to expect and that we meet our legal responsibilities and stay accountable.

The Federation University Australia Act 2010 made by Parliament enables our University to operate and govern itself as an independent organisation.

The Act sets out how the university must run, how decisions are made, and what powers it has which differ from those of an ordinary company. To support this, the Act stipulates for the university to enact legislation (Statute and Regulations) which prescibe how these requirements are undertaken.

Any areas not covered by legislation are governed by existing policy or procedure.

The Federation University Australia Statute 2021 (PDF 396 KB) was approved by the University Council on 24 August 2021 and by the Minister for Education and Youth. It replaces all previous statutes (effective 1 January 2022).

Federation University Australia also operates within the requirements of other federal and state legislation. Learn more about these and our regulatory bodies.
