Governance
Learn how Federation's corporate and academic governance works and how our governing bodies shape strategy, policy and quality assurance.
The Council is the governing authority of Federation University Australia and is responsible for the direction and oversight of the University.
Council’s work is supported by five council standing committees, the Academic Board and the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership team. These governance groups meet regularly to discuss and monitor University strategy and performance, learning and teaching, research, policy and planning, and risk and compliance.

Governance principles
Federation University Australia's purpose is to deliver the transformative education, training and research that our regions need to thrive. Strong governance helps ensure our decisions reflect the needs of our communities, including First Peoples, and the long-term interests of regional Victoria.
Our governance arrangements support inclusive, responsive decision-making, with clear oversight and accountability.
Council has committed to full alignment with the Expert Council on University Governance Principles which emphasise:
- accountability for strategy, performance and outcomes
- diversity of skills, experience and perspectives
- independence of academic governance
- transparency and openness as a public institution
- ethical leadership and a positive culture
- meaningful engagement with staff, students and communities
- effective risk management and long-term sustainability
- responsible workforce and remuneration practices.
These principles guide how Council sets the University’s direction, oversees performance and engages with staff, students and our communities.
