SOCOG3309 The New China
This course introduces students to Chinese politics, culture, society and economic development since its economic reform in 1978. It investigates the major ideological debates in China and explores the social, cultural and political background of this new economic super power. Issues regarding equity and social justice for women, ethnic minorities and other community groups are discussed. Dilemmas facing Chinese people in balancing economic development and environmental protection, collective goods and individual human rights are examined. The cultural foundation for the current authoritarian style of leadership and future of democracy in China are explored.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government and students pay a contribution amount. Each unit is classified into a band, depending on the study area of the unit (this discipline may be different from the study area of your course).
