How to find unit outlines

Find out what unit outlines are and how to access them.

If you've landed on this page after selecting a unit outline, it's because that outline is no longer available online. But don't worry – you can request it via our enquiries portal.

What is a unit outline?

A unit outline is an overview of the subject content – basically, a summary of what the class will cover. It's different to a unit description, which contains info about class times, teaching staff, assessment tasks, readings and more.

How unit outlines can be used

You can use unit outlines to:

  • learn more about units in a course structure
  • understand units within majors, minors or specialisations
  • help choose your electives.

If you're applying for credit for previous studies at Federation or other institutions, you'll need to provide the version of the unit outline/s you completed (as listed on your transcript).

What unit outlines can't be used for

Unit outlines don't include scheduling – if you're looking for this info, check your course structure or log into my Student Centre. And if you want specific details (like assessment requirements), you should read your unit descriptions (available on Moodle).

How to access a unit outline

If the unit is currently available, it will appear in the unit search.

If the unit is no longer offered or the outline isn't available, you'll need to submit an online enquiry:

  1. Log in.
  2. Select 'Ask a question'.
  3. Select 'Ask a question related to my studies'.
  4. Under 'Category', choose 'Letters, Requests & Cards'
  5. Under 'Sub category', choose 'Unit outlines'
  6. In the 'Briefly tell us about your question' box, write 'Unit outline request'.
  7. In the 'Tell us more' box, include your name (if it was different at the time of your study), your student ID and the unit/s required. Add the unit codes and names as they appear on your transcript.
