PHSGL2011 Modern Western Political Philosophy
The course will address key thinkers and ideas in the history of modern political philosophy. Each movement will be examined in relation to its specific historical and social contexts, and analysed in terms of its relevance to present day debates. The course is divided into three main themes: sovereignty; freedom; and equality. These themes, focused around conservative, liberal, and socialist currents in Western political thought, will allow us to consider differing conceptions of and arguments for political obligation, rights, justice, and equality.
