PAMTC2004 CRITICAL STUDIES IN MUSIC THEATRE 4
"Students will consider the broad social contexts and philosophical shifts that underpin the development of naturalism and realism in the theatre. They will trace and reflect upon the continuing dominance of realism in theatre to contemporary times with particular reference to Music Theatre. They will connect this trajectory with the acting task of contemporary music theatre practitioners. Students are asked examine what it means to `act naturally¿ and consider the limits of a style of theatre that aspires to hold the `mirror up to nature¿. Key theorists, playwrights and plays will be studied along with the rise of the director, with particular attention given to the methods and influence of Stanislavsky. "
