Link Google Scholar to your Library account

Access full-text articles directly in Google Scholar when you connect to your Federation account.

Google Scholar indexes research articles and abstracts from most major academic publishers and repositories worldwide. While abstracts are freely available, reading the entire article may require a subscription.

You can link your Google account to Federation Library to access free and full-text articles available from library subscriptions.

Why link Google Scholar

  • Access full-text articles and journals from the Federation library through Google Scholar.
  • Use your Federation login—no extra accounts needed.
  • Works on and off campus.
  • See which resources are available to you.
  • Get clear information about article retractions in your search results.

How to link your account to Google Scholar

To link your account you'll need to update the settings in your google account manually, or by using our custom settings.

To use our custom settings:

To connect manually:

  • go to Google Scholar
  • select the menu button ☰ in the top left corner
  • select 'Settings', then 'Library Links' in the left hand column

How to use Google Scholar

Narrow your search results to find more relevant, recent and high-quality academic sources.

Filter by publication date

Under the 'Any time' heading select from the preset options (e.g. 'Since 2025') or select 'Custom range...' and enter your specified date range.

Sort your results

Sort your results either by date or relevance.

Filter by article type

Under the 'Any time' heading use the 'Review Articles' filter to find articles that review scholarly literature.

There’s no built-in filter to show only peer-reviewed sources. Instead, use Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory to check if a journal is peer-reviewed (you'll need to log in with your university login and password).

Save articles to read later

  1. Sign in to your Google account.
  2. Select the 'Save' button underneath the search result you want to save.

View your saved articles

  1. Click on the menu button ☰ in the top left corner.
  2. In 'Settings', select 'My library' in the left hand column.

Google Scholar can generate citations (references) for the items you find, but keep in mind these are automatically generated, and can be incorrect. Use FedCite to check for accuracy.

Generate a citation in Google Scholar

  1. Select 'Cite' underneath your chosen result
  2. Copy the citation for the referencing style you're using
  3. Check the suggested citation against guidance in FedCite.

Export a citation to EndNote

  2. Select 'EndNote'
  3. Open the downloaded .enw file

Discover related research

Select 'Cited by' to see how many other articles have cited an article. Each result may also have cited by links as well.

Find related articles on the subject

Select 'Related Articles' to find related articles on a subject. This feature typically links to more articles than in the 'Cited by' option.

Create an alert to get a notification whenever a new result matches your selected search.

  1. In the left-hand menu, select 'Create Alert'
  2. Check your alert email. If you're logged in, your email will automatically appear. If you're not logged in, select 'Change email' and enter your email address.
  3. Check the search you would like to create an alert for.
  4. Select 'Create Alert'.

To stop alerts, select the menu icon ☰ in the top left-hand corner, select 'Alerts' and select 'Cancel'.
