Federation expands free student pantry to support more TAFE students
Federation University has expanded its Nourishment Nook program to TAFE, giving more students access to free food, hygiene products and everyday essentials through a new pantry at the Ballarat Campus (SMB) Library.
The expansion will help ease financial pressure for students, ensuring they can focus on their studies rather than the rising cost of everyday living.
Since its launch in August 2024, the program has supported almost 420 students each month across Federation’s Mt Helen, Gippsland, Berwick, Melbourne CBD, and Camp Street campuses.
More than 6,000 visits have been recorded, highlighting the strong demand for practical support.
Demand for the service increased by 25 per cent each month throughout Semester 1 this year, reflecting the important role the Nourishment Nook plays in helping students manage ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
The Nourishment Nook is free for students, with Federation University funding regular deliveries from Foodbank. Designed to be welcoming, respectful and easy to access, the service is available to any student who needs a little extra support at any stage of their studies.
Brandon Weatherson, Team Leader for Vocational Pathways, said the free pantry service will make a real difference for TAFE students.
“We know many students are feeling the pressure of rising living costs and we want to ensure we’re supporting them as much as we can and removing any barriers to their education,” Mr Weatherson said.
Access to healthy food plays an important role in students' wellbeing, confidence and ability to succeed in their studies, making services like the Nourishment Nook an important part of creating an inclusive learning environment.
“We never want our students to have to choose between being able to afford a meal that day or being able to get to class or work while they’re studying with us," Mr Weatherson said.
“The Nourishment Nook is here for any student who needs a little extra support, whether that's every week or just during a particularly challenging time.
"There's no judgement in asking for help. We want every student to feel comfortable walking through the door, knowing they're part of a community that cares and is here to support them."
Inclusion is at the heart of Federation University as a leader in equity with the highest proportion of students who are first in their family to attend university.
The Ballarat Campus (SMB) Nourishment Nook operates from the library every Thursday from 1 pm to 2 pm. Students are welcome to drop in and access the service in a friendly, supportive and confidential environment.
