Celebrating student success at Foundation Showcase

Jessica Davies balances study with work and caring responsibilities, alongside volunteering at Ballarat Wildlife Hospital.
Federation University Australia has celebrated outstanding student achievement through its 2026 scholarship program, supporting students to continue their studies, while making a real difference in their communities.
This year $1,002,750 has been awarded across 232 scholarships in Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland and Horsham – recognising potential and easing financial barriers for local students.
Among the students being celebrated is Jessica Davies, a Bachelor of Science – Veterinary Bioscience (Honours) student and recipient of the 2026 Cyril Callister Scholarship.
The first in her family to attend university, Jessica is balancing study with work, volunteering and caring responsibilities.
Alongside her studies, she volunteers at the Ballarat Wildlife Hospital, caring for animals and supporting day-to-day operations. Her work combines field research with practical experience, directly contributing to local conservation efforts.
She also volunteers tracking wildlife movement across Western Victoria, including koalas, echidnas and birds of prey. Working with a Federation University research team and the Wildlife Hospital, she is gaining hands-on experience while helping build a better understanding of native wildlife in the region.
Jessica said the scholarship, which supports students in science-related disciplines, is helping cover the costs of study and travel so she can continue her research.
“Alongside my studies, I volunteer on field research that involves tracking koalas, echidnas and raptors across western Victoria. That requires long hours of driving to remote locations for field surveys, as well as regular travel to and from university for classes and laboratory work.
“With fuel costs adding up very quickly, the Cyril Callister Scholarship has made it possible for me to continue both my study and this important fieldwork.
“I’ve always had a passion for working with animals and this opportunity has allowed me to gain hands-on experience while contributing to research that supports wildlife conservation in our region.”
Professor Duncan Bentley said the scholarships – and the generous donors who make them possible – play a vital role in supporting both student success and community impact.
“Our students are achieving extraordinary things in their studies and in their communities and, thanks to the generosity of our donors, they can pursue those ambitions and create lasting impact.
“These scholarships are helping shape the next generation of professionals, leaders and role models across our regions and beyond.”
