A Month of Sundays music series returns for second season

Federation University Australia’s Arts Academy is bringing back its popular A Month of Sundays chamber music series for a second year, offering audiences a fresh program of Sunday afternoon performances in Ballarat’s historic Old Law Courts Building.

The 2026 series opens with the return of the acclaimed Flinders Quartet, appearing as part of its national tour after a standout performance in last year's program.

Audiences will experience works by Mozart and Beethoven performed by one of Australia's leading chamber ensembles, celebrating 26 years of international performance excellence.

A Month of Sundays continues to build on Ballarat's reputation as a destination for world-class arts and culture, bringing renowned musicians to the region while providing accessible, intimate concert experiences for local audiences.

Arts Academy Director Professor Richard Chew said A Month of Sundays had proved popular with audiences who wanted to experience stunning music-making in a relaxed and informal setting.

“The series gives audiences the opportunity to hear outstanding chamber music up close and connect with world-class performers in an intimate environment,” Professor Chew said.

“It’s also a great way to showcase our heritage Media Arts space in the Old Law Courts on Camp Street, which sits at the heart of Ballarat’s Arts Precinct and provides a unique setting for these performances.”

The opening concert will feature Mozart's Adagio & Fugue in C minor, K.546 alongside Beethoven's String Quartet in C Minor Op.18 No.4 and String Quartet in E-Flat Major Op.127.

Professor Chew will also feature in this year's program, performing an intimate acoustic set with master Australian blues guitarist Chris Finnen and later with his piano trio Inscape, accompanying renowned soprano Kate MacFarlane.

A Month of Sundays will be held from August 23 at the Arts Academy's Old Law Courts Building, one of Ballarat's most beautiful heritage venues.
