This unit will introduce students to the interrelationship of midwifery practice as primary health, maternity care and public health. It facilitates the student to a greater understanding of vulnerability in childbearing women. The unit also includes issues such as violence within the family, child abuse, sexual assault, drug abuse and associated pathologies. The special needs of Indigenous women and their families will be addressed. The role of midwifery and maternity care in improving perinatal outcomes for disadvantaged women and families will be discussed and debated, including issues of cultural diversity, refugees, and vulnerable populations.
