This unit is part of a sequence of professional engagement units designed to support pre-service teachers (PSTs) in critically examining, participating in, and reflecting on the diverse dimensions of the teaching profession. Through engagement in a professional learning community, PSTs develop their professional knowledge and practice through collaborative learning, dialogue, and reflective inquiry.The unit provides opportunities for PSTs to critically analyse teaching and learning experiences encountered during professional placement and to build connections between these experiences and their prior studies. Particular emphasis is placed on broader professional issues, including the emotional dimensions of teaching, evolving educational contexts and cultures, school improvement processes, and the development of professional identity. PSTs are encouraged to investigate questions arising from their own practice and to reflect on emerging insights as they progress through their professional journey.This unit supports the professional experience component of the Master of Teaching program, during which PSTs complete a 35-day placement in an educational setting. Students are required to undertake and document activities outlined in the Professional Experience Guidelines, working collaboratively with their school-based Mentor Teacher throughout the placement. Professional learning and readiness for practice are demonstrated through completion of the Assessment for Graduate Teachers, with guidance and support provided by an assigned University Mentor.
