Digital skills for online learning

Get to know the range of systems and platforms needed for online learning at Federation.

You might be familiar with online study, or perhaps it's something you've never done before. Either way, we encourage you to explore the Federation systems you’ll need to access learning materials, communicate with your teachers and classmates, and create and submit work. Being tech-savvy will give you an advantage as you progress through your course. And don't worry if you get stuck – there's plenty of support available

Before you start

You'll need adequate hardware, software and internet access to study at Federation. Make sure your technology meets our minimum IT requirements.

Using Moodle

Moodle is your all-in-one online study resource. Log in with your student ID and password to find learning materials, participate in class forums, submit assignments and access academic support services.

Know your technology

Turnitin
Turnitin checks the originality of your work by comparing it to online sources and other submissions. You and your lecturer can use the similarity reports to review your writing.
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is what you'll use to join virtual classes and do group collaboration. You can chat, share files and work together in real time from anywhere.
Kaltura
Kaltura is the video platform in Moodle that's used for uploading, sharing and streaming content. You’ll use it for video assignments and accessing learning materials.
Mahara
Mahara is your ePortfolio tool – designed for showcasing your work online. You can use it to create pages, share projects and even submit assignments directly through Moodle.
EndNote
EndNote helps you manage your bibliographies. Use it to store sources, insert formatted in-text citations, annotate PDF full-text attachments and share references with others.
Office 365
You'll get free access to Office 365. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and more (which you can use online or download). It also comes with 1TB of cloud storage.
InPlace
InPlace is the system you’ll use to manage your student placements. It lets you upload mandatory documents, communicate with coordinators and track your placement details.
Respondus
You might use Respondus LockDown Browser if you've got online exams. The program can only be used on a desktop or laptop computer, and you'll access it through Moodle.
