Biography

Dr Matt Thorley is a lecturer in Humanities at Federation University Australia, where he teaches across history, culture and interdisciplinary studies. His research specialisation lies at the intersection of maritime history and law, with a particular focus on how oceans, navigation, and legal regimes have shaped states, empires and global connections over time.

Beyond maritime studies, Matt has a strong interest in civilisational analysis, engaging with long-term historical debates about cultural continuity, conflict, and exchange. His scholarship also extends to contemporary issues, including Indigenous education and employment, on which he has researched and published, contributing to discussions about equity, policy and historical context in Australia.

Through his teaching and research, Matt seeks to connect historical inquiry with present-day social and legal questions, encouraging students and readers to think critically about the forces that shape societies past and present.
