Biography

Naomi Nelson is a lecturer and literacy coordinator at Federation University, Mount Helen. She educates pre-service teachers and works with colleagues to deliver contemporary and engaging literacy courses.

Beginning her career as a primary teacher, Naomi’s experience in education spans 18 years where she has held various positions, specialising in the literacy field. She was a literacy coach for the Grampians Regional Office, literacy leader at a Melbourne primary school and a literacy consultant for the Catholic Education Office, Melbourne.

Naomi is a PhD student at the University of Tasmania, researching the potential effects of medium on reading comprehension.

Areas of expertise

Naomi’s expertise lies in the design, classification and analysis of reading comprehension assessments. She has experience analysing comprehension performance across different media and text types, examining literal and inferential understanding, and applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches to investigate readers’ cognitive and strategic processes during comprehension tasks.

Her research expertise is complemented by extensive professional experience in education, including many years as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, literacy consultant and literacy leader, where she supported the development of literacy teaching and assessment practices across school contexts.
