Biography

Dr Ishanka Weerasekara is a lecturer in Physiotherapy and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Coordinator at Federation University Australia.  

Ishanka brings nearly 15 years of teaching experience gained across three countries, including over a decade of close involvement with the Australian physiotherapy curriculum across three states. Since joining Federation University, she has coordinated two large, interprofessional common units, enrolling more than 100 allied health students, delivered in both online and face‑to‑face modes. She has supervised HDR and honours students and, in her HDR Coordinator role, oversees more than 50 higher degree research candidates, including coordination of their supervisory teams. 

Ishanka is deeply committed to reducing research waste and advancing evidence-based research, with particular interests in musculoskeletal and chronic diseases. She has published more than 60 peer‑reviewed articles (h‑index 24; i10‑index 37). Notably, 43.6% of her publications have appeared in journals ranked in the top 10% worldwide, and 22.8% are among the top 10% most cited publications globally. 

She contributes a distinctive blend of academic leadership, methodological rigour and applied research expertise to multidisciplinary teams in national and international contexts. Her impact is further strengthened through extensive collaborations with global initiatives and organisations, including the World Health Organization, Cochrane, World Netball, Globa Burden Disease and FIFA research networks.
