Electric vehicle charging

There are now electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at our Mt Helen and SMB campuses.

As part of our commitment to a more sustainable, greener future, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are now available at our Mt Helen and SMB campuses. This initiative supports the University’s Towards Net Zero 2033 strategy.

The installation of 12 Delta chargers was funded by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) through the Victorian Government’s Training the Next Generation of Agricultural Professionals project (run by Federation TAFE).

The chargers are compatible with most electric vehicle makes and models, except those with CHAdeMO plugs.

New to charging?

You'll need the Chargefox app to use the EV chargers and view your charging history. You can download it for free from App Store or Google Play.

Fees are charged on a kWh basis. Different rates apply depending on the speed of the charging station. Make sure you don't stay plugged into the 50kw fast charger after you're finished or you could be charged an idle fee.

FAQs

Anyone can use the chargers – Federation staff and students, as well as members of the public. Most makes and models of EVs are compatible (except those with CHAdeMO plugs).

You don't need a parking permit to use the chargers, but you can be fined if you park at a charging station without using it. If you need to park on campus after charging, make sure you follow the parking regulations.

You can take as long as you need to charge your vehicle, but once you're finished, you must leave the station or idle fees may apply.

Chargefox will check the units regularly to make sure they're operating correctly. Any faults will be reported to Property & Infrastructure. Our security team will note vehicles that don't comply with the parking regulations.

Campus electricity comes from both solar panels and the grid. Under the Towards Net Zero initiative, we're committed to sourcing all of our power from renewable sources by 2033.

There's no fire risk. An independent fire engineering specialist performed a thorough risk assessment at both sites, and we consulted with Fire Resue Victoria (FRV). We then followed their recommendations about charger locations and mechanical fire protection interventions.
