Mechanical engineers apply the principles of physics and mechanical science to the design and construction of all forms of mechanical systems. This program covers all aspects of design specification development research evaluation manufacture installation testing operation maintenance and management of machines and systems. This will include but is not limited to mechanical and mechatronic systems automated systems and robotic devices heat transfer processes thermodynamic and combustion systems; and fluid and thermal energy systems. As a graduate you are eligible to become a member of Engineers Australia and seek managerial roles with private consultants contracting companies or federal state and local government organisations. Significant opportunities for employment exist in Australia as well as in South-East Asia and throughout the rest of the world.

Fees and scholarships
Tuition fee information
Commonwealth Supported Places are subsidised by the Australian Government. The tuition fee is called the student contribution amount. The indicative fee above is based on a typical first-year enrolment for this course and should be used as a guide only. For 0.5 EFTSL (60 credit point) courses the certificate fee is displayed. Your fee will depend on the units you chose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved credit you receive.
How it's calculated
The government sets the fee each year. The amount depends on the discipline area and band of each unit. 2026 annual student contribution amounts for 1 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) range from $4,738 (Band 1) to $17,399 (Band 4). Other fees
You will also need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
Fee assistance
If you're eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, you can defer the payment of all or part of your student contribution fee. If you’re also eligible for a SA-HELP loan, you can defer your SSAF payment too. You won’t have to start paying either loan back until your income reaches the compulsory repayment threshold.

- Our Mt Helen, SMB, Camp St and Gillies St campuses are located in Ballarat.
Contact hours
You’d be looking at about 25-30 hours per week (if you’re full time), but this includes on-campus classes and self-directed study (i.e. homework).
Work integrated learning
You will undertake a minimum of 30 days (225 hours) paid placement in industry.
Students will complete 30 days of paid placement as part of Cooperative Placement unit (COOPE9011 Co-operative Placement (Engineering)).

Entry requirements
Entry requirements (non year 12)
Candidates must possess a three-year Bachelor of Engineering Science, Bachelor of Engineering Technology or Bachelor of Engineering degree to be eligible to enrol in the Master of Engineering Technology. Places will be allocated based on academic performance in the applicant’s undergraduate degree. Students may apply to enrol only in the stream (or discipline) which matches the stream (or discipline) in which the Bachelor's degree/s was obtained. This is stipulated by the regulations set by the accrediting professional body (Engineers Australia).
Minimum requirements:
- Applicants who have not completed secondary education or undertaken any TAFE or university studies will not be eligible for entry into this course.
English language requirements
Overall Academic IELTS band score of 6.0, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.
