University legislation
The Federation University Australia Act 2010 (Vic) sets up the University and explains what it does. It also creates the University Council, which is the main decision‑making body. The Act allows the University to make its own rules, called statutes and regulations, and to make decisions through the Council or approved staff.
The Act, statute, and regulations are supported by University policies and processes. These give more detail about how things should be done or cover areas not included in the laws.
In some areas, such as workplace safety, employment, and equal opportunity, other government laws also apply. These laws help guide the University when it creates its policies and processes.
After advice?
The Legal Office is the main office at the University that looks after legal matters. It gives legal advice and support to the University Council, senior leaders, and staff. This advice covers the University’s rules, teaching, research, business activities and more.
If you're engaging in a project or commercial arrangement that could generate legal implications for the University, request assistance as early as possible. All University legal work must come to the Legal Office including when the assistance of outside lawyers are needed.
The Legal Office maintains an extensive suite of templates to support staff in preparing consistent and compliant drafted agreements across a wide range of business activities. The templates are designed to streamline contract creation, reduce legal risk, and ensure alignment with organisational policies and procedures. Staff can access, download, and use these templates as required.
