Tackling rising costs with free professional clothing for students
Federation University is helping students navigate the cost-of-living crisis with its innovative ‘Styled for Success at Fed’ initiative, enabling students to dress to impress without having to spend on new corporate clothing.
Launched in Gippsland last year, more than 100 items of professional clothing have been given away – supporting students with job interviews, placements and new roles.
In partnership with BGT Jobs & Training Ballarat, the initiative removes financial barriers for students entering the workforce ensuring they can make a positive first impression without the stress of additional expenses.
Thi Nhi Vo, a second year Master of Social Work international student, who used the clothes for professional development training, said the initiative was a gamechanger during tough economic times.
“Styled for Success helps ease the financial burden and boosts students’ confidence. Whether domestic or international, this is a useful resource for all students, and it is entirely confidential,” she said.
“Students should feel comfortable accessing the service if they need to. Not only can they save on costs, but reusing clothes makes the service environmentally friendly too."
Ms Vo said the service demonstrated Federation’s commitment to student wellbeing.
“Federation not only focuses on academic study or teaching quality – it’s the support it provides to students that makes it stand out from other universities. Fed makes moving from university to a job a very smooth transition.”
Styled for Success at Fed has attracted strong support with donations from community members, charities, staff and students.
Early demand has centred on practical items, including shoes for nursing students preparing for placement and warm coats for students new to Gippsland winter conditions.
“This initiative has highlighted the generosity of locals and op-shops, who have kindly contributed alongside our staff and students. It has really created a sense of engagement across the board,” Careers and Employability Advisor Melissa Oakley said.
Careers and Employability Manager, Penny Corser-Hatten, said the initiative was providing a much-needed helping hand.
“Giving clothing a second life might seem small, but it can make a big difference for students who need it,” she said.
“A strong first impression can open the door to a great career and that’s exactly what this initiative aims to achieve.”
The free and confidential service is open to all higher education and TAFE students, as well as recent graduates.
Students can take as many clothes as needed, subject to donations and demand.
Clothes donated should be clean, pressed, professional and in excellent condition to ensure students present themselves confidently in professional environments.
