Federation University launches first mid-year nursing intake in Ballarat
Strong demand from local learners has driven the introduction of a new mid‑year nursing intake at Federation University’s Ballarat campus – the first time the course has been offered mid‑year.
The additional intake creates a more flexible entry point for aspiring nurses, allowing students to begin their studies locally without waiting for the traditional start-of-year intake or relocating to Melbourne.
The move comes amid a significant workforce challenge in the Central Highlands, with an additional 11,600 healthcare workers needed over the next decade, according to Victorian Skills Plan data.
Head of Nursing Professor Deborah Kirk said the decision reflected both strong interest from prospective students and the responsibility of regional universities to support the communities they serve.
“We see this as a really important opportunity for aspiring nurses to start their studies sooner, while staying connected to their local community,” she said.
“By offering a mid-year intake, we’re removing barriers for students and helping to ensure our region has the skilled healthcare professionals it needs into the future.”
The new intake is expected to benefit a diverse cohort of students, including those looking to change careers or those with a Diploma of Nursing who are looking to upskill.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Duncan Bentley said the new intake reflects the University’s focus on delivering the skills local communities need.
“Regional Victoria can’t afford to lose future health professionals,” he said.
“The workforce pressures facing regional communities – particularly in health – are real and growing. Opening a mid‑year intake in Ballarat is a practical, student‑focused response to that local need.”
Applications for the mid-year nursing intake are now open, with classes set to commence on 20 July.
