SOCOG1004 Neoliberal Modernity: The Politics of Development
What is neoliberal modernity, what are neoliberal policies, how do they inform a politics of development, and what are their impacts? The focus of this course is the theory and practice of neoliberalism in historical and contemporary contexts. Students will consider the dominance of neoliberalism as an ideology, a set of policies and a form of governance that have had profound impacts on political, social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts. This introductory course will be relevant to students interested in understanding the impact of political and economic principles on a) practices of development and b) human and animal welfare and environmental issues, and the relationship between such principles and normative societal assumptions. It will also be relevant to students wishing to understand the context for contemporary calls for `greener¿ and more sustainable practices in economics and development.

A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government and students pay a contribution amount. Each unit is classified into a band, depending on the study area of the unit (this discipline may be different from the study area of your course).
