PHILO3200 Art and Judgement: An Introduction to Modern Aesthetics (Advanced)
This course introduces students to a range of problems and ideas in modern aesthetics. In particular, it focuses on the philosophy of aesthetic judgment, asking questions like the following: What is it to judge artworks? What grounds our judgments of artworks? Alongside these problems of judgment, we will also work through a series of questions regarding the ontology of art. These include: What is an artwork? Are artworks distinct from other objects? Finally, we will engage in questions about modernity and modernism in the arts, including: How have our concepts of art and artworks been challenged and developed in the modern period? What is the role of art in modern society? Students will read a range of important primary texts from writers in the history of modern aesthetics.
