MTHIS1001 Music Theatre History 1
This course investigates the history of Music Theatre by tracing the development of the form with particular focus on the Broadway tradition and its associated roots. Students will develop an understanding of how Music Theatre operates within larger cultural, political, economic and social contexts. The course highlights the historical contribution of Jewish immigrants and African Americans to this uniquely American art-form and the role Music Theatre has played in exporting the American `Dream¿ to global audiences. Students will also explore associated forms such as vaudeville, revue, burlesque, melodrama and operetta. The research, analytical and interpretative skills developed in this course will feed in to the practical work undertaken in Music Theatre studio classes.
