MSWPG7201 Contemporary Social Work Theories and Practice

Students of this unit will be introduced to the social implications violence, abuse and oppression as social processes at the individual, interpersonal, organisational, institutional and state-level with social implications. Students will examine concepts and understandings of violence, abuse and oppression in various contexts, including family violence, disability and mental health. Students will demonstrate an understanding of group-based experiences of violence, including social works role in inter-generational trauma experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and Communities. Using a complex case-study, students will apply theoretical perspectives of violence and abuse to critically examine and explore the causes of violence and implications of practice approaches across various settings at the individual, group and community level. Students will critically analyse dominant practice frameworks, such as trauma-informed and/or influenced approaches in varied social work contexts, such as child protection, family violence and mental health. Students will explore social responses and individual and community resistance to violence and abuse and oppression. Using a power and oppression lens, students will further examine how structural factors, such as class, social-economic status, gender, race and ethnicity impact individual and community experiences of, and responses to, violence, abuse and oppression.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) unit fee

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is one that is subsidised by the Australian Government, which means students only pay the student contribution amount of the tuition fee. CSPs are only available to eligible domestic students.

The student contribution amount depends on the unit and how much funding the Government provides. Each unit is classified into a band based on its discipline (which may be different to your overall course discipline).

2025 student contribution amount: $2,124

2025 grandfathered student contribution amount (for students who commenced before 1 Jan 2021*): $997

* If you are a continuing student (who commenced your course before 1 January 2021) you will continue paying the same amount as you would have, had legislative reforms not been implemented for any units that would otherwise have an increased student contribution amount.

Clinical Psychology & Professional Pathways

For Clinical Psychology & Professional Pathways bands, the student contribution amount is determined by the accredited course. Visit our CSP page for further information, including a list of accredited courses. Students not studying in an accredited course will pay the fees listed above.
