This course introduces students to the study of Literature at university. It aims to develop students' appreciation of literature and confidence and skills in analysing literary texts by introducing them to a range of relevant key concepts, techniques and terminology. Topics may include basic definitions of literature, text, narrative and story; how point of view, setting, characterisation and narrative structure shape a story; authorship and the construction of reading positions; allusions and relationships between literary texts; and literary techniques such as metaphor, symbol and allegory. A variety of literary texts are used as examples. Analysis of these texts introduces students to the purposes of and approaches to literary criticism. To prepare students for further study in Literature and other Humanities disciplines, this course also incorporates a strong focus on developing practical skills such as reading critically, comprehending academic writing, identifying themes and literary techniques, researching a topic, selecting and using reference material, using textual examples to support an argument, writing an essay, and referencing.
