BATCC1002 Ways of Reading and Seeing
In our media-dominated world, we are constantly reading, viewing, and interpreting the world through the lens of print, literary, digital and screen media. These media provide the images, stories, and soundtracks to our lives. We read or view for many reasons, including entertainment, information, and social participation. Reading and viewing can also have a considerable influence on shaping our view of the world, and our responses to texts can be critical, aesthetic, or affective. This unit functions as an introduction to the disciplines of literature and media and screen studies. It introduces students to ways of reading and viewing literary, media and screen texts critically and with the skills to understand how their meanings are produced. Students will learn basic concepts of textual analysis and key features of literary and screen media, as well as developing an understanding of the role of readers and viewers in constructing textual meaning.
