Project outline

A comparative inquiry into the social, technical and governance tensions over the energy transitions in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria and Lusatia Germany. The study appraises the conditions for effective post mine land use capability and feasibility, alongside political negotiation of economic change as a conditioning principle of post-mining regional development.

In the Latrobe Valley, The project will include future land use scenario modeling and investigate the regulatory processes to enable a transitioned economy.  The technical feasibility of post-mining land characteristics, including required remediation, will be examined to provide both a land use needs analysis (of the future economy) and a picture of land capacity (land use availability). 

This project is funded for 3 years, with the possibility of a 6-month extension upon application.

Stipend

$50,000 per year, provided in fortnightly, tax-free instalments comprised of $40,000 as the base stipend, and a $10,000 top-up from Federation University

Project support

$3,000 per year available to spend on the research project provided by the Research Training Program (RTP) allowance

Tuition fees

Up to $32,000 will be covered by the Research Training Program (RTP) fee-offset scholarship for domestic students

Internship

The project will contain an internship with DEECA and DTP as part of the Latrobe Valley post mine land use planning project

To be eligible for the project, you must: 

• be eligible for a PhD
• willing to undertake full-time study
• be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
