About the Hamilton Area Rural Australians for Refugees group
The Hamilton Area Rural Australians for Refugees group was established in 2015 by a small group of people who felt the need to be a voice of balance against misinformation levelled at people seeking asylum, in particular those coming as maritime arrivals.
The group was initially supported with a local philanthropic donation. They now run several fundraising events annually in the form of cultural events, film night and garden stalls. The group provide ongoing financial support for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray, phone cards for detained asylum seekers and various appeals such as that for refugees fleeing Afghanistan since 2021 fall to the Taliban. Since 2017 the group have supported a student annually studying at Federation University.
