Confirmation of candidature
Developing a successful confirmation of candidature application is an important first step in commencing your higher degree by research. The confirmation of candidature process ensures HDR projects are viable, progressing, and can be completed in the allotted timeframe.
Confirmation of candidature is a formal milestone for all Higher Degree Research (HDR) students.
This milestone involves a written component and an oral presentation. These usually occur within the first year of full-time HDR enrolment.
There are two parts to the confirmation process. Students must do both to achieve confirmation:
- A written report
- A panel seminar
Before submitting the written report and conducting the panel presentation, you will need to notify the Graduate Research School that you have an 'Intention to Confirm Candidature'.

What happens next
After your panel presentation, the panel members along with your supervisors will discuss your presentation and written report. You will not be present for the deliberation, rather, you will receive the outcome.
There are four possible outcomes that can be recommended:
- Confirmed
- Confirmed subject to minor conditions
- Confirmation deferred
- Not Confirmed
All outcomes will be accompanied by a written report within five days of your presentation. In the case of a candidate being ‘Not Confirmed’, they will be invited to Show Cause.
