The Mt Helen campus came alive on Wednesday, 8 October, as students, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Muslim Prayer Space.

Located in Room 114, Building U, the space is modern, safe and comfortable. It offers Muslim students and staff a place to pray, reflect and connect throughout the day. Its position near cafés and student common areas makes it easy to reach and part of the everyday rhythm of campus life.

The celebration began with a Quran recitation in Arabic by Imam, with translation by Jawad. Guest speaker Muhammad Sami shared personal reflections on the importance of prayer in Islam.

Bachelor of Science student Liz spoke on behalf of students, sharing what the new space means to her and how much she is looking forward to using it during her time on campus.

“I feel a genuine sense of belonging to Federation. The new prayer space makes me feel at home. It’s modern, safe and comfortable, and it’s in the perfect spot near cafés and student spaces. That makes me feel like a real part of the Federation community. I’m excited to meet people at the launch and share in the activities, like enjoying free food, exploring Islamic art and trying on hijabs to take home,” Liz said.

Leon Kerr, Director of Student Services and Registrar, officially opened the space and thanked everyone who helped bring the project to life.

Guests then explored Islamic art activities, tried on and took home hijabs, and enjoyed food and conversation together. The atmosphere was warm and inclusive, reflecting the strong sense of community that defines Federation.

The new Muslim Prayer Space is more than just a room. It reflects Federation’s commitment to creating places where every student feels welcome, supported and respected.

For international students, having a dedicated space to pray and connect can make a real difference when settling into life on campus. At Federation, we’re in it with you, and this space is another way we help students feel at home.
