More gender identity options at Federation

19 August 2025 ยท 2 min read
The Australian Government recently updated the gender identity options for university students. This welcome change means all Federation systems will now be updated, allowing students more choice when describing their gender on student records.

Inclusivity is something we pride ourselves on at Federation. We are committed to improving our practices and systems to create more gender inclusive environments for students.

We recognise that a person’s gender identity might not match the sex listed on their birth certificate or other official documents. The number of options provided by the federal government to describe gender has expanded. From this semester, students can update their records to align with their gender, representing a greater step towards gender inclusive environments at Federation.

Students will be able to choose from the following options on student records:

•    Woman or female
•    Man or male
•    Non-binary
•    I use a different term
•    Prefer not to answer.

Updating your information

Students can change their gender on student records at any time by completing our amend your personal details form and lodging it via the enquiry portal or in person (as described on the form).

For help filling out the form, call Student HQ on 1800 333 864, access the live chat via our website, or speak to someone at Info Point in the Library.
