Four Federation University Australia Arts Academy graduates are shining on stage in a Melbourne production of Legally Blonde The Musical, having completed their studies within four years of one another.

Emily McDougall (Elle Woods) Jackson Cross (Emmett Forrest), Azriel Halge (Sundeep Agrawal Padamadan) and Isabelle Pascua (Delta Nu ensemble) each landed roles in the production, which is based on the beloved 2001 film Legally Blonde.

“I showed up to the first day of rehearsals and saw so many familiar faces, it was a complete coincidence,” Ms McDougall said.

“We all have a love for and commitment to the show, so it was really nice we all ended up here together.”

Having discovered Legally Blonde The Musical when she was 14 and fast declaring it her favourite, securing the lead role of Elle Woods holds extra significance for Ms McDougall, who also shares the protagonist’s favourite colour of pink.

“I love Elle Woods’ character. She’s smart and savvy and embodies a kindness that drives the story forward,” Ms McDougall said.

“I really want people to come away from the show feeling a real sense of positivity and optimism.

“There’s so much happening in the world right now it’s hard to focus on the good things, so I want audiences to forget about everything outside the theatre and enjoy the comedy, upbeat music, singing and dancing.”

Federation University Arts Academy Acting Director, Associate Professor Angela Campbell, said the academy was proud to see graduates making their mark on the musical theatre industry surrounded by familiar faces.

“The skills we teach are immediate and transferrable into work,” Dr Campbell said.

“It’s such a big step moving from uni into the workplace, especially into the performing arts industry and we have such a focus on making our students industry ready.

“We hope we can make that transition a little less daunting and they’ll feel empowered to showcase their skills and express themselves in that environment, just be themselves and ready to perform, and not be overwhelmed.”

Legally Blonde The Musical will run until 27 July at The National Theatre, 20 Carlisle Street St Kilda.
