Living on campus: How Kea found community and support at Fedliving

Written by Kea · 7 April 2025 · 4 min read
Moving to a new country for university is both exciting and challenging. For international students, finding a place that feels like home can make all the difference. In this blog, Kea, a Master of Social Work (Qualifying) student, shares her story of studying at Federation University, the impact of living on res with Fedliving (the University’s on-campus accommodation) and her advice for international students looking for a home away from home.

Hi, I’m Kea from the Philippines.

I’m currently pursuing my Master of Social Work (Qualifying) at Federation University in Berwick, Australia. Coming from the Philippines, moving to a new country for university was a big leap – one filled with hope and determination. When I chose Australia, I was not just looking for a place to study; I was searching for a community where I could feel at home, stay connected to my roots and grow both personally and professionally.

Why I chose Federation University and Fedliving

Before coming to Australia, I worked as a university instructor in the Philippines, teaching history and social sciences. Pursuing a master’s degree abroad was a long-held dream, and Australia captured my heart with its deep love for sports, vibrant multiculturalism and commitment to a balanced lifestyle.

When researching universities, Federation stood out because of its affordability and the opportunity to experience a regional, slower-paced lifestyle. Once I accepted my offer, I enrolled in Fedliving for my accommodation because I was moving alone and wanted a secure and welcoming place to live.

Living on res made everything so much easier – I didn’t have to stress about finding a rental or dealing with the uncertainty of moving to a new country alone. It was comforting to know I had a safe, welcoming home waiting for me the moment I arrived in Australia.

Life at Fedliving: Finding my community

Moving abroad can feel overwhelming, but living on res made my transition much smoother. My flatmates became my first friends in Australia, and I immediately felt like I belonged. Having a support system from the start made all the difference – it wasn’t just about having a place to stay, but about having people around who understood what I was going through and shared the same experience.

Another huge benefit was the convenience. Fedliving at Berwick is only a three-minute walk from campus, which made balancing my studies and personal life so much easier. I never had to worry about long commutes or being late to class.

Becoming a Residential Advisor

One of the best parts of my experience at Fed Living was becoming a Residential Advisor (RA). In this role, I helped other students settle in, organised events and worked on initiatives to build a sense of community. I started and led programs like the Walking Club and Garden Club, and helped organise international student nights where students could connect, share experiences and celebrate cultural diversity.

Being an RA allowed me to take on a leadership role, support other students and create a welcoming environment for those who were also navigating life in a new country. It wasn’t just about where I livedit was about making a difference in the community.

Why Fedliving is the perfect start for international students

For international students moving to Australia alone, Fedliving is an excellent choice. It’s a perfect starting point, especially if you don’t have family or connections here. It provides a safe, supportive environment where you can make friends, adjust to life in a new country and figure out your next steps without feeling overwhelmed.

Looking back, I realise how much Fedliving shaped my experience at Federation University. I studied here, worked here and lived hereit was truly a holistic experience. Having that built-in support system made all the difference in helping me transition smoothly into student life in Australia.

Course experience: A world-class learning environment

One of the highlights of my studies has been the hands-on exposure to direct practice in social work through the placement program. Under the close supervision of my academic mentors, I’ve had the opportunity to refine my skills in the field I’m passionate about. This practical experience has been invaluable in preparing me for the challenges and rewards of a career in social work.

In addition, the diverse backgrounds of my classmates have significantly enriched my learning experience. With a blend of domestic and international students, our classroom discussions are thought-provoking, offering a wide range of perspectives that have deepened my understanding of the subject. This diversity has been essential in shaping a well-rounded view of social work and its complexities.

The support of classmates and community

One of the most valuable aspects of my time at Federation has been the support system among my classmates. We all come from different walks of life, but we support each other through our studies. Whether it’s sharing schedules, helping each other find classrooms, or forming study groups, there is always someone to lean on. This sense of unity has made such a difference in my academic journey, and I am deeply grateful for it.

Scholarship support and opportunities

I was fortunate to have received the 2023 Pathway to Victorian Scholarship, which provided financial support and made my studies more manageable. It’s great to see that there are opportunities like this for international students, as they make higher education in Australia more accessible.

Life in Berwick: A peaceful place to call home

Berwick has been the perfect place for me to study. It’s quiet and laid-back but also well-connected, with a train station nearby that makes getting around easy. The slower pace of life has allowed me to focus on my studies while also saving money compared to living in a busier city. It is the best of both worlds – a calm environment with easy access to everything I need.
