How Federation University helped me achieve more than just an IT degree

Janvi volunteering at events to connect with current and future Federation University students
Hello, my name’s Janvi.
I grew up in Amritsar, India, a city known for its food, culture and vibrant festivals. I’d always dreamt of studying overseas and, after finishing Grade 12, I knew I wanted to build a career in technology. Fast forward 3 years, and I’m in the final semester of a Bachelor of Information Technology at Federation University’s Berwick Campus. I can say with confidence that I found exactly what I was searching for, and more. I’m excited for you to read my story to see what it's really like studying abroad.
Why I chose Federation University Australia
When I started thinking seriously about studying overseas, I knew I wanted more than just a degree. I was looking for a university that was affordable and offered personalised support. I didn’t want to be in huge lecture halls where no one knew my name; I wanted to learn in small class sizes where I could actually connect with my lecturers and ask questions.
My family already knew about Federation University’s reputation for industry-leading IT programs and strong student support. My brother and cousin were studying in Australia at the time, and they suggested I consider Fed. The more research I did, the more it felt like the right choice.
My Agent was really helpful too. They connected me to Federation’s international student scholarships, which allowed me to focus more on my studies and experiencing life in Australia when I arrived.
In the end Federation felt right because the classes were small, their campuses felt welcoming, and I knew I’d have support here.
First impressions of Berwick Campus in Melbourne
When I first arrived at Federation University’s Berwick Campus, it didn’t take long to feel at home. The location is perfect: close enough to Melbourne city to explore whenever I want, but with its own calm and friendly atmosphere. The train station is a short walk from campus, so even without a car, I’ve always found it easy to get around.
There are lots of beautiful green spaces near campus, which make me feel connected to the outdoors and gives me a spot to unwind from exams. At the same time, Berwick has a lively main street filled with restaurants, cafes and healthcare services. The best part, though? I found an Indian grocer just 5 minutes from campus that has many of the comfort foods from back home.
Berwick really has everything: peaceful study spots, fun events, and great food. I never feel far from home.

Turning study into real-world skills
For the final year of the Bachelor of Information Technology, you get to complete a group practical project. I’m working with a real client to design a website, working to their brief and business needs. The project has been really challenging but it’s helping me apply my technical skills while developing soft skills like collaboration, client relationships, and importantly communication. Working with a client taught me how to be professional. From project planning to running meetings, the course gave me the experience and confidence that I can do this in the real world.
Looking back, I have really enjoyed my IT program. At first, it took a little while to get to know everyone and adapt to the Australian style of assignments and referencing. Now, I have lots of friends from different backgrounds that I met during class and by getting involved in university events. They gave me a lot of confidence with my English and guided me through assessments and life in general.
Support that makes a difference
From my very first day at Federation University, I felt genuinely welcomed. My lecturers and tutors really got to know me. They would check in often and support me with career advice, further study options – even connecting me to job openings. They’re so encouraging and approachable. I felt I could ask them anything.
Living on campus with Fedliving also made a big difference to my experience. I was grateful to receive an Accommodation Scholarship, which made living on campus even more affordable than renting elsewhere. I extended my stay for the rest of my degree as I found Fedliving residences to be safe and I received a lot of support. The residential team check in regularly, providing mental wellbeing support just by knocking on my door for a chat. They really care! We even celebrate everyone’s birthday each month with cake, and they host events like International Night so we can dress up in our cultural outfits, dance and eat lots of yummy food.

Start your journey with confidence
Before I arrived, I had the same nerves that most international students feel. Will I make friends? Will I cope with my studies? Will I find my way around? I quickly discovered that I didn’t need to worry. From Orientation to Fedliving, I always felt supported, and that gave me the confidence to take on new challenges like becoming a Peer Mentor and joining the Student Senate. Those experiences helped me grow in ways I never imagined when I first left India.
My advice for new students is to try your best and be curious. Ask questions, get involved in the university community, and take advantage of the support that’s always available at Federation. You’ll be amazed by how much you grow and the opportunities waiting for you.
